  7. OK, no more fancy (and rigged) demos.  This Read Me file contains
  8. the straight scoop on DylanTalk, and should always accompany the
  9. DylanTalk extension and sources.
  10.  
  11. What╒s DylanTalk?
  12.  
  13.     DylanTalk is a System 7 extension that will speak the text in modal dialogs,
  14.     and the title of controls when they are clicked.  A system menu (either
  15.     a tornado or Casper with a slash through it, depending on whether Fred
  16.     remembered to put in the new icons or not) in the Finder allows the user
  17.     to select the voice from a list of personalities. (Dean╒s personality is
  18.     the best developed for a straight voice, but the other voices are fun to
  19.     show off.)  The DylanTalk extension should go in the System Folder or
  20.     Extensions folder.  The personality files should go in the DylanTalk
  21.     Preferences folder, which goes in the Preferences folder.

  23. What╒s included?
  24.  
  25.     The full source code for the DylanTalk extension can be found in the
  26.     DylanTalk source folder.  This source shows various sundry stuff as
  27.     what we patched to start talking, how we parse sentences, and how the
  28.     personalities are switched.  Guess which parts Dean wrote, and which
  29.     parts Fred wrote.  It╒s pretty obvious.

  31.     A built version of DylanTalk and the personality files are in the Built
  32.     folder.
  33.     
  34.     The SILIE folder contains the source for a totally useless application
  35.     with gratuitous graphics.  The only reason it╒s included is because it╒s
  36.     got some pretty cool level sampling code.  The comments in this file are
  37.     lacking at best, and probably non-existent in most areas, since Fred whipped
  38.     this guy together in about 4 hours.  If anyone╒s wondering, SILIE stands for
  39.     Simple Inflection and Lexical Inference Engine, and it╒s pronounced like
  40.     ╥silly╙.

  44.     A big thanks to Don Louv for rendering us the gratuitous but really cool
  45.     graphics.  Jim Reekes was an invaluable SmartFriend¬ to get us through
  46.     level metering and for preventing Fred from writing any unnecessary
  47.     double buffering code.

  49. Miscellaneous stuff
  50.  
  51.     All the files contained in this package may be freely distributed, but
  52.     must be accompanied by this Read Me.  Feel free to use anything you find
  53.     interesting in your own project, but you╒d better give Dean and Fred
  54.     some credit somewhere.  (Dean likes to collect cool shirts, and Fred needs
  55.     some furniture.)

  57.     We╒ve both learned that giving out ways to contact us means we╒ll get
  58.     strange e-mail and phone calls.  So we╒re not going to tell you where we
  59.     are this time.  This will be the only release of DylanTalk, so please don╒t
  60.     ask for bug fixes or new features.
